Dog collar size calculator
Measure your dog's neck to find the collar size.
How to measure
- Use a soft tape (or a piece of string, then lay it against a ruler).
- Wrap it around the neck where the collar will sit, usually the base of the neck.
- Keep the tape snug enough that it doesn't slide, but not tight.
- Add room as shown by the calculator, then pick a collar whose adjustable range includes that number.
The two-finger check
Once the collar is on, you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. This is the fit test the American Kennel Club recommends. Any looser and the collar can slip over the head. Any tighter and it can rub or restrict breathing.
Growing puppies
Puppies outgrow collars quickly, so check the fit every week or two. Don't buy for the adult size: a collar too big for a small neck can slip off.
